Report: We held Impromptu Debate Workshop

Generals 2023/09/06

An impromptu debate workshop was held for three days on August 18th, 30th, and 31st. This activity started in 2022 as an activity for the internationalization of Kyoto University School of Public Health, and this is the second year of activity. A total of 10 people, 8 students and 2 faculty members, participated in this workshop.

In an impromptu debate, teams of three people are formed to discuss a topic given to them on the spot, and they are divided into those who are affirming and those who are opposing a particular statement. After 15 minutes of preparation, each person debates in English for approximately 3 minutes. This is a method of conducting an impromptu debate which was developed by the Parliamentary Debate Personnel Development Association. This training is expected to strengthen the students’ abilities to explain logically in English. In addition, since the debate is held in teams, sense of cooperation is fostered. From the second day, we welcomed a certified judge from the Parliamentary Debate Personnel Development Association and received the judge’s evaluation of the debate we had conducted.
