On Friday, May 2, 2025, a joint lecture on evidence-based medicine (EBM) was held as a hybrid class for 14 fourth-year medical students from Kyoto University and 18 medical and public health students from the University of Malaya in Malaysia.

This class was taught by faculty members from Kyoto University School of Public Health as part of the “B13 Tutorial” curriculum for Kyoto University fourth-year medical students to understand healthcare as a social system and learn about its contemporary issues. Some students were assigned to the Department of Health Informatics, School of Public Health, Graduate School of Medicine, Kyoto University, and took multiple lectures related to EMB.
As part of this, a hybrid joint lecture titled “EMB: A New Approach to Medical Management” was held in collaboration with medical students from the University of Malaya (Malaysia).

The following two lecturers from the University of Malaya and Kyoto University delivered lectures on EMB practice and research via ZOOM and on-site:
Dr. Ayako Kohno, Junior Associate Professor, Dept. of Health Informatics, School of Public Health, Graduate School of Medicine, Kyoto University
Lecture Title: What is evidence-based medicine (EBM) and how does it apply to healthcare delivery?

Associate Prof. Nik Daliana Nik Farid, Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya

After the lecture, a Q&A session was held between the Japanese and Malaysian medical and public health students and the lecturers. A medical student from Kyoto University asked a question about the research related to EBM conducted in Malaysia, and about the background of why youth mental health is an important issue in Malaysia. A Malaysian student also asked a question about what kind of education and awareness-raising is being done for medical professionals in Japan when applying AI and technology based on EBM in the medical field.

Through this program, medical students from Japan and Malaysia could study social and public health medicine together, broadening their horizons as medical professionals and providing an educational environment that aims to cultivate human resources with an international sensibility.
