Report: Kyoto University School of Public Health International Lecture My Career Journey on Two QMs: Quality Management and Quality Measurement

In the afternoon of October 16, 2024, an international lecture on “My Career Journey on Two QMs: Quality Management and Quality Measurement” was held at the School of Public Health, Graduate School of Medicine, Kyoto University (KUSPH). About 20 students and faculty members from KUSPH participated in this international lecture, which was held face-to-face and online via ZOOM. Prof. Kuo Piao Chung, College of Public Health, National Taiwan University was invited as a guest speaker. He was a Kyoto University Distinguished Visiting Professor at KUSPH for one month in October 2024,staying at Department of Healthcare Economics and Quality Management. This international lecture aimed to cover the basic ideas for Prof.
Chung’s academic job at NTU-SPH about teaching, services, and research in quality management and quality of care.

After introducing his background, specialty and research domain, he gave an overview of his research on quality management and quality of care. He explained the basic concept of quality and quality of care and the introduction of quality management.

Next, he shared his teaching and services at NTU-CPH. He explained the course design, and social services of NTU-CPH. He emphasized its high quality because the course has won various awards.
In the next section, he shared his experiences and ongoing projects of research in quality management and quality measurement.

Finally, he concluded his lecture with the following words: “Be humble and grateful,” “Be brave in the academic field,” “Be prepared for the policy window or opportunity,” and “Set aims high.” These words are a Vision of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, where he obtained his PhD degree, “Protecting Health; Saving Lives—Millions at a Time.”
