As a part of internationalization promotion strategy which aims to produce a new generation of world-leading researchers through a synergy of internationalization strategies involving both education and research and in effort to put forth high standards and strengthen public health education, training, and research to improve the quality of the public health workforce in Japan and globally, Kyoto University School of Public Health (KUSPH) offers the following programs with overseas universities to those students who are accepted to KUSPH:

➀A Double Degree Program for Master’s degree (DDP):

This program provides students with an opportunity to obtain two master’s degrees within a period of two years (or more), namely a Master of Public Health (MPH) from KUSPH and a related degree from partner university (see slides for more detail). To fulfil the degrees’ requirements, students are required to submit 2 different theses, one to KUSPH (4 credits) and another to the partner university. The theses could be of related topics, coming from a single research project. Students are required to complete 2 sets of coursework; one at KUSPH (26 credits; 10 credits transferable from the partner university) and coursework at the partner university (number of credits depending on the degree chosen at the partner university, some credits transferrable from KUSPH depending on the university).

The merits:

1. Maximizing time: it usually takes 4 years to obtain 2 master’s degrees, however, this program enables students to complete 2 degrees in 2 years (or more), maximizing time by offering intensive courses, a summer-school program, a credit transfer system, and a joint research.
2. Partial scholarship: When up-taking the DDP, students who are enrolled in MPH at KUSPH will also be officially enrolled at the partner university, however, they do not pay tuition fees at partner university. KUSPH students pay tuition fees at KUSPH only throughout the program.
3. Personal growth: The DDP enables candidates to acquire the ability and skills to plan, manage, solve problems, think analytically and develop a broad understanding of his/her chosen field of study.
4. International experience
5. Career opportunity: Diverse career opportunities in academia, research, industry, government and many other areas.

The demerits:
As explained above, intensive workload within short timeframe; 2 sets of coursework (with some credits transferable) and 2 different theses.

➁Super Global Course: a single-degree program under joint supervision

KUSPH’s Super Global Course (SGC) offers the opportunity for KUSPH master and doctoral students to conduct research and complete their thesis under the joint supervision of their main supervisor from KUPSH (home university) and a co-supervisor from overseas university (host university) of students’ choice. Students may also be eligible for KUSPH’s internal one-week travel aboard scholarship for a face-to-face discussion with the co-supervisor. Before and after travelling, all research discussions could be prepared and carried on through emails. The co-supervisor may become a member of the thesis examination committee.
Upon completion of all the requirements for SGC, the students will be awarded with an SGC certificate from the President of Kyoto University at the time of graduation.
